| Hi Rhonda,
My name is Lynne and I have a temp date of Aug 6 for surgery. I jumped on
a plane Tuesday and flew to meet Dr.R. and go to his dinner. I came home
more impressed then ever. I am a VERY tough audience, and he won me over. As
I left that evening, after listening and talking to over 20 patients, I was
certain that I had chosen the best surgery and the best doctor for me. It is
a very personal choice and no one can make a decision like this for
you...but after listening to that room full of patients...there was no other
choice for me. It wasn't that much money to fly Southwest and $25 to rent a
car, but it was such a valuable experience for me. I suggest, if it is
possible...fly to LasVegas and check it out yourself. All your questions
will be answered. There is no price for peace of mind.
Lynne
PS his staff was also GREAT, very helpful, and it was good to see who I
was talking/writing to. |

| Hi everyone!
just had my surgery today and boy i feel good...the stress of it is gone
and i think that helps for a faster recovery. I had my surgery at about
10:30 and was in my room at 2:30. sipped a can of gatorade, went potty and
took a walk. I use my pca pump 1/2 hour before not for pain but for the
discomfort area. by this evening I have gone on 4 walks, seen all my
littermates, drank 2 cans of gatorade eaten half of a yogurt, had i saltine
cracker and a couple licks of salt. i truely believe that you must follow Dr
Rs. post surgery instructions and sip, sip, sip from the get go. i also took
my medicine. I made sure the day before surgery to eat lightly, eat
watermelon and yogurt and drink, drink, drink. I wasn't taking any chances.
good luck to everyone. the other side for far is great. I Thank Dr. R, his
staff, Suzanne, Mike and God for helping me on my journey to become
healthier and thinner...I am doing the happy dance...very slowly

I know how you feel. I felt the same way myself until I started watching
Dr. Rutledge's videos on YouTube. The more I watched the more I realized I'm
not obese because I'm weak-willed, lazy, or ignorant.
Watch the Gil Gerard videos, and pay close attention near the end of
part 2 where Dr Rutledge says,
"Blaming the obese person for their obesity, I don't think is reasonable
or appropriate. These people are not bad people, they're not weak people.
They have a hormone that makes them hungry that's out of balance."
When my friend told me to look at the clos.net website, one of the first
things I did was watch the Gil Gerard videos and when I heard that I sobbed.
Finally I understood the reason for my obesity and constant hunger, and all
those failed diets.
It's a journey, but you have to stop blaming yourself. You are a victim
of your body's hormone imbalance. You are not a bad person, you are a person
who deserves to live a good and healthy life, and you deserve to have this
surgery to help you correct this. Start looking at your obesity as a medical
problem, it is not who you are. And watch as many of Dr R's videos as
possible. Go to his YouTube site and search for "ghrelin" and start
watching. Start with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m3bNJmGsv8
And think about this: If you don't have the surgery what is your future?
More health problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, early
death... Do you think that is what your family really wants for you?

> I have had Lap Gall Bladder Surgery. And I can not find
anything if that is allowed. I have 3 small very small scars including one
that a little larger above the belly button.
So my question is has anyone had prior-adominal surgery Lap or Not, and
still recieved the MGB?
Just neverous before sending my stuff in.
katDear Kat,
I had the Mini-Gastric surgery last year and I had a very large Gall Bladder
scar from surgery that I had 31years prior. That was no problem. Go ahead
and send in your stuff, but if you still have some questions please give the
doctor a call and he will answer any of your questions.

Hi!
I too had hypertension and was on medication for it. I
never worried about salt but knew not to add any salt to things. On the day
of my surgery I was told not to take my medication for the hypertension. I
was dry heaving and very sick after the surgery and needless to say my blood
pressure was high. The nurses were taking my blood pressure every 15 minutes
for a couple of hours....very uncomfortable. By the next day I was feeling
ok and was released from the hospital. The first thing I did was buy a wrist
blood pressure monitor and took my blood pressure. It was normal. I didn't
believe it so I took my blood pressure another 3 times. They all came up
normal. Over the next couple of days of course I was drinking V8and G2
Gatorade, eating saltine crackers, and adding salt to my soup. My blood
pressure remained normal. I was concerned about my low pulse. I have to say
my pulse rate typically was not high prior to the MGB (mid 60's) but after
the MGB it was in the low 50's (52 to be exact). I freaked and called Sandy,
Kim, and Rutledge. I tried taking 4 packets of salt to raise the pulse rate.
DO NOT DO THIS!!! EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! It raised my pulse rate to 56. When I
got my staples removed I ask Doctor Rutledge what causes the blood pressure
to go down after surgery. He said the reason why blood pressure decreases
was due to the pressure from the fluids surrounding the brain, heart,
kidneys,..etc being released and are no longer there. I asked him why my
pulse rate is so low. He said that the heart had to be very strong to push
blood through the body under that type of pressure and when the pressure is
gone the heart doesn't have to work as hard and therefore a lower pulse
rate. He also said that when I become thin my pulse rate will be even lower
because it is like a Mack engine heart in a Volkswagen body. What I am
trying to say is do not worry about taking salt your blood pressure will be
ok.

Hello all,
I don't post often on the site - but I read it pretty regularly. I wanted
to share a HUGE milestone that occurred for me yesterday. I am switching
gyms, and when I went to my new gyms web page they had a BMI calculator to
help you figure out your best work out plan. I plugged in my information:
5'10, 175lbs and it listed my weight as "DESIRABLE". UNREAL!!! Desirable!
Can you believe it? Who would have EVER thought my weight would be
'desirable' by anyone’s standards, let alone GYMS?!? I have never been so
excited in all my life. My work out plan included tips for toning,
strengthening and increasing flexibility- but not a WORD about weight loss.
Now - allow me to explain why this is so amazing (as I'm sure ya'll can
relate). I've been overweight my ENTIRE life. I weighed more than 12lbs at
birth - and it's been an uphill battle ever since. My weight peaked at
nearly 500lbs when I was 21 years old. I was officially out of control. I
contacted Dr. Rutledge, and we set up a plan. First - I went through a
fasting program at Johns Hopkins University that allowed me to shed more
than 150lbs in a little over a year. This plan was perfect to get me to the
weight I needed to be to have a successful surgery - but never would have
been a long term success plan. I couldn't eat ANYTHING or I'd gain weight!
Only powder drinks and A LOT of working out for that year. Yuck. I went
into my MGB weighing 350 pounds, and lost more than 100lbs that first year.
Then I plateaued at 240, and couldn't get the scale to budge. I tried for 3
years and nothing seemed to work- so I called Dr. R again and scheduled a
revision. I had my revision in '07 and lost an additional 40 pounds. It
wasn't quite the results I had hoped for - but I felt I was ready to consult
with a reconstructive surgeon. No amount of working out can correct a more
than 300 pound weight loss, and I just couldn't get that scale to budge
another inch. I had my first round of reconstructive surgery about 2 months
ago (lower body lift and an arm lift) and got rid of more than 20 pounds of
skin! That was amazing.
End result: I look and feel FANTASTIC! Weighing in at 175, sporting a size
12 (I realize that may not be small to some of ya'll - but I'm a tall girl,
and I really AM big boned. LOL. I think my skeleton is probably a size
8/10.) I am NOT fat for the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE!!! I almost don't know
what to do with myself. I want to explode from the sheer excitement of it
all. WHOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!
Thank you, Dr.R and the entire Clos team. Ya'll are truly an inspiration.
And thank you to everyone for reading about my little milestone. :)
Have a wonderful weekend!

| Well today is four weeks since my MGB. I have been feeling
great my blood pressure is down to 116/72 and I have lost 26 pounds. It is a
great feeling to have my pants too big, and having to put extra holes in my
belt so I can cinch them up tight enough.
I have not had any problems since my surgery. I did eat a bit too much a
couple of times and had the discomfort, so I have quickly learned to eat
slower and in smaller quantities. I am eating most anything I want at this
point. I had a few bites of roast beef tonight (well- chewed) and did not
had any problem with that. I have been hungry at times, but most of the time
I have to remind myself that I need to eat something. The old hunger is
gone. I also find that I feel satisfied within 5-10 minutes, a new feeling
for me. I don't feel deprived or have cravings for things like before.
Someday the scientists will figure out Grehlin, PYY 3-36 and all the other
hunger hormones. Till then, the MGB has saved my life.
I have done so well now my wife is hoping to have the MGB next month. We
are both nurses and have both been impressed with Dr. Rutledge for his
surgical skills as well as his interaction with patients. I am happy that I
had the MGB and wish I had known about this surgery 10 years ago!

| As one of several self appointed "Queens of Slow Losers" I
think I owe my MGB, Dr R and all of you an update.
I didn't lose anything from the end of July '06 (169-172 range) until
between Christmas and New Year's when I moved, had a bad virus, ran myself
ragged. I finally stepped on the scale and found I had hit the century mark.
This morning, I'm down seven more pounds since I weighed last about a month
ago.
I don't weigh as compulsively as I used to so it kind of sneaks up on me
and I notice it in my clothes first. This should serve as reinforcement to
new post-ops that weighing often is counter- productive! Remember to measure
as often as you weigh, as inches drop during plateau periods.
I no longer consider myself an MGB under-acheiver. I've lost 107 post-
op, 118 from my top weight. My honeymoon period isn't over yet, at nearly 21
months. My journey has been different, but the destination is just as
satisfying.
I've heard the magic words a lot lately - "Don't lose any more!!!" Wow,
what a rush :-) The truth is I have no control over the most recent drop - I
haven't done anything differently that I can identify - I'm just plumbed for
(eventual) success!
I bought a pair of size six jeans because my eights are baggy, but I
can't find them! As soon as I get to try them on I'll let you all know! I
can wear a junior 7-8, but they're hip huggers and I hate them.

Laurel,
I can share my experience with diabetes 2 and MGB.
In May '06 I had MGB and at that time I gave myself two shots in the stomach
daily of Byetta (gila monster saliva) and 1500 Milligrams daily of Metformin.
My pancreas was shutting down and insulin was right around the corner. I
didnt want to go there. I was warned many times by Dr Rutledge to only take
Metformin when sugar was above 150. I followed that advice.
Right after surgery I quit the Byetta shots and
tested blood sugar three times a day. I was still taking 500 milligrams
twice each day and had to add a little glyburide five months after surgery.
That seemed to do the trick. The glyburide jump-started my pancreas and
within a month I was down to 500 milligrams of Metformin once a day. I had
to be extra careful with the glyburide because I hit a 60 blood sugar three
times and was very shaky. My A1c test is 6.8 (8.0 before surgery). So, I had
a stubborn case of diabetes and it is much much better. My thinking is much
more clear. My memory is better. I have tons more energy. My depression has
lifted. I have lost 55 lbs.
My advice is to be extra cautious with medication
and test more often. Different foods will affect your blood sugar
differently than they did before. I've noticed spreading food (especially
carbs) out over the day rather than any high carb meal keeps the sugars in
check. You just can't assume after surgery that your diabetes is cured. You
must be vigilant and listen to your body as it adjusts to a new metabolism
and plumbing.
I credit MGB for saving my life. The quality of my
life today is a miracle. I no longer fear the inevitable, heart problems,
high blood pressure, losing feeling in my feet and waking up every night
with terrible leg and foot cramps and headaches from sleep apnea. I felt as
if I was only observing life rather than experiencing life. I didn't realize
how sick I was until I got well. Today I walk for hours in the mall without
tiring and without the horrible back, leg and foot pain that was part of my
life.
This winter I am up at Sundance with the celebrities
watching films and looking almost as good as they do. Life is good.

Hello Ryan,
I am 52 and have a son also whose name is Ryan. A
very good name! I will be happy to be a contact for you. I found out about
the MGB on the internet while searching for the different types of weight
loss surgeries. I had never heard of the MGB and was actually scheduled for
the Roux-n-y before finding out about MGB, and I immediately called Dr.
Peraglie in Houston and asked many questions about it, and 2 weeks later I
was having the MGB instead of the Roux-n-y. Thank God He led me to the CLOS
site. The MGB is much less complicated, far less risky and can be reversed
if needed.
I would have this surgery again in a heart beat and
place my life in the hands of Dr. Peraglie over and over again. He is the
BEST!!!!!!!
I had my MGB 6 months ago on 7/26/06 in Houston
Texas
I weighed 345 and now weigh 278, 67 lbs. gone
forever, and I am very happy with my results so far! I have had no
complications, in and out of the hospital in 1 day, and was back at work 7
days after my surgery. I had very little pain from surgery, it was all in my
left shoulder and neck, none in my abdomen at all. And what pain I did have
was quicky gone from having the pain medications in the recovery room. I
never had any nausea with vomiting nor have I vomited since surgery.
My Doctor, Dr Peraglie is the most compassionate,
caring Doctor I have ever met and being a nurse I know many Doctors but none
compare to Him. He has the best bedside manner and treats you like you are
family, I thank God for him, and his wife is precious too, and if you decide
to have your surgery in Houston, Texas, or in Florida, you will be very
happy you did.
I wish you much success with your new life. Where
have you decided to have your surgery? Keep us posted on your success. Let
me know if you have any other questions? You can also see my story on the
MGB gallery about being one of the ones who had the gastric band, in 1988,
had it reversed, then had the MGB. The band was a big failure, and the MGB
has been a Great Success and there's no comparison!
Take care & God Bless,

Hi Marie,
I'm Kim and I live in Portland. I just had my MBG
with Dr. R. on 11/15/06. I'm also 5'4". I am willing to correspond with you
about any questions you may have. There is a support group in the Portland
area that meets for breakfast every month or so, and a support group in the
Eugene/Springfield area that is starting to meet regularly too. These are
weight loss support groups not specific to MGB, but great support
nonetheless. Let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to e-mail me
any questions. Good luck with the process and welcome! It will be the best
thing you have ever done!

I wanted to drop you a note to tell you that our
entire family has had the MGB, including our 3 teenage daughters (ages 15,
14 and 12 at the time of surgery---Our 12 year old is the youngest patient
to date.) All are doing great.
Our girls have really come out of their shells,
developed very active social lives and have started taking fencing classes
together.
I am including my contact letters. Please feel free
to contact us if you have any questions, or if your son would like to speak
to our daughters about the surgery and how things went for them.
Good luck and have a great day.
My wife researched weight loss surgery for almost 2
years before she decided the MGB was the safest procedure around. To date
our entire family has had the surgery. My wife, myself, as well as our 3
teenage daughters. All are doing great, much more active, and much
healthier.
Hello, my name is Wayne Robbins. I had the Mini
Gastric Bypass surgery with Dr Robert Rutledge on November 7th, 2002. I
weighed 250 lbs and although I didn’t think that I was all that heavy, I had
several co-morbidities. I was on two medications for high blood pressure,
I had sleep apnea and snored so badly that I was unable to sleep in the same
room with my wife for four years. I had continuous sore knee joints and
lower back pain and suffered from mild depression. I am 5’10” tall and I was
45 years old at the time of surgery.
My wife Elizabeth Robbins, had the surgery May 15th
2000, and I saw how it changed her life as well as our lives together. Her
weight at the time of surgery was 350 lbs and she had a BMI of 56. She also
suffered from high blood pressure and other health problems because of her
weight. I knew how it helped with the co-morbidities of my wife as well as
that of other patients, and, coupled with the fact that heart and kidney
disease ran in my family, I decided to have the surgery.
As of Oct.1, 2004, my weight is 180 and my BMI is
25. My blood pressure is 124/76, without ANY medications! I have stopped
snoring (according to my wife). I have no more joint pains, and the lower
back pain only occurs after a bad round of golf, in which I now walk the
entire 18 holes instead of ride in a cart. I have had no problems with
foods and can pretty much eat anything I want, but what I want now is fresh
foods and lean meats. I had a little nausea in the beginning but now feel
great! My surgery took 31 minutes and I was in the hospital for 24 hours.
This procedure has been a blessing for my entire
family. I am a healthier now than I was before I got married 18 years ago.
I thank God for Dr Rutledge, and his ability and foresight to develop this
procedure and for training other surgeons how to proficiently perform this
life saving procedure. He has given the lives back of my wife, me and at
least 4000 other people!
I will be a contact for anyone, and help in
whatever phase of the process you are involved.
Please contact me at wr@clos.net> (704) 682-1549 |

Hi!
I am happy to be a contact for you. I had the
surgery 19 months ago and I have lost 132 pounds, from 268 to 136 pounds.
On June 27, 2004 I was in a car accident. At the
time I was overweight but it wasn't something I was concerned about ~
outwardly anyway. I was hurt pretty badly in the accident and was on pain
meds for just about a year. In that time, I gained 50 lbs from lack of the
ability to exercise (too painful) and the continued use of percocet. I was
in a bad downward spiral and losing ground everyday. I needed a cane or
walker to get around because I was in so much pain.
Then one day I found CLOS on the internet and the
adventure began. It really wasn't a struggle to get everything done, except
in my mind; I was just sluggish about all of it because everything felt like
I was moving through molasses. The biggest challenge was stopping all the
pain meds, which I had to do 5 weeks before the surgery. And taking the
pictures was REALLY HARD on my ego.....now I wish I had taken all my
measurements, but I was too embarrassed at the time.
I was committed to the surgery beyond all doubt, and
agreeing to live through 5 weeks of pain without pain meds was evidence of
that.
On June 27, 2005 (I found the date to be a good
omen) I flew to LV. I registered the following day. I was scared out of my
wits: what if I was the one person to not lose weight, or didn't come out of
anesthesia.. ..all the fears that I have heard so many pre-ops share on this
board. So on the morning of June 29, I showed up at the hospital. I was
scheduled to be #3. Much of it is a blur because I was so apprehensive.
...that is, until I was sent to pre-op. All went smoothly there, and the
staff was incredible. I got into the operating room and was under anesthetic
in moments. The next thing I remember is something coming out of my throat
and nose. (My surgery took 19 minutes!!!) Didn't really feel anything. I was
in recovery for an abnormally long time because one of the patients from the
previous day had not left yet. I got all the ice I wanted in recovery, but
it added to my biggest issue...that of having to go to the bathroom and not
being able to go until I got to my room. When I finally got to my room, I
used the restroom and then tried to get organized and acclimated. I did use
the morphine pump because I was so afraid that my back would start hurting
on top of everything else. BUT GUESS WHAT - NO pain anywhere. I could not
tolerate the Gatorade, so lived on ice, Jell-O, broth, v-8 juice and
crackers for all of stage one. I got out of the hospital at 1 PM the next
day after walking the halls several times during the night and visiting with
my litter mates.
The next few days were about figuring out what and
when to take meds, taking walks, and starting the process of learning to eat
in a whole new way. I took a shower on the second day and it felt great.
Because it was 114 degrees outside we stayed in for a few days. I slept a
lot. We did go to the lake one day and the Grand Canyon one day. Mostly I
just had to make sure I didn't get dehydrated.
My biggest mistake was on the night we were flying
home. I had packed the pepto bismol and Tums so I didn't have any on the
plane with me. I had left the hotel at 5:30 pm and didn't get home until
2:30 am......and by then I was in pain, Pain, pain, PAIN. My throat and
chest felt like it was on fire. As soon as I got home I unpacked the pepto
bismol and put the fire out. Little did I know until three days later, that
I had developed an ulcer. Dr R put me on quite a regimen of pepto, Tums,
prilosec and pepcid AC. I threw up after almost everything I put in my
mouth.....NOT FUN!! It was the only time I wondered what I had done to
myself. But then I began to feel better and I could eat more. ( I did try
something that was not on the list for stage two before I should have and
paid the price.....DON" T do it). I stayed on stage one for two weeks and
stage two for about three weeks. I added a few things to my diet, but my
main problem for the first 4 months was that nothing tasted good, especially
liquids. I talked to Dr R and he suggested the estrogen patch, which I was
on for a week. I got terribly constipated and bled non-stop for three weeks,
so I didn't put another one on and was much better without it.
It is weird, even one year out; some days I can't
fit anything in my pouch and so drink protein drinks mixed with water and my
liquid vitamins. On other days I can eat just about anything. Most of the
time though I just couldn't find anything that appealed to me. Liquids were
the hardest to get in, because nothing tasted good and I just couldn't
satisfy my thirst. I started to tolerate lemonade in about the 3rd month and
realized it was because it was sour and not sweet. My body did not tolerate
sweet drinks. In month 4 I found Smart Water and thankfully my insatiable
thirst was satisfied. I would also drink ruby red juice, which I tolerated
really well because of the tartness. At six months out I still struggled
with ulcer symptoms, and so was treated with a prescription form of prilosec
for 6 months. At 10 months out, I was still having ulcer symptoms and Dr R
recommended (seriously) that I have an endoscopy. (I was still throwing up
occasionally and when the fire started, it was difficult to stop it). I
finally had one on July 7, 2006. I will talk more about that later in the
letter.
It has taken me the better part of the year to
retrain my eating habits and to eat differently. .....everytime I sit down
to eat I have to remind myself ....small bites,,,,chew chew chew, and only 2
-5 bites at a time to see how the food sits with me. I take it slow and
don't drink any liquids while eating...... ..it has often been a challenge.
I often have times when I am not hungry at all and I have to remember to
eat. I have also found that if I eat salad before any meat, I can tolerate
the meat better.
I have lost 130 pounds since surgery...and I am
thrilled to have that much weight off this frame and my injuries
....although my neck, back and shoulder still need to be treated (from the
accident). But I am completely free of pain medications since before
surgery.
I have more energy now. I religiously take my
vitamins in the form of UniVera Ageless Essentials. I could not take the
pill form of vitamins because I would feel nauseous for hours afterward.
UniVera Essentials has become a mainstay for me. I take citrucel every day.
I still carry Tums around just in case I get acid reflux from something I
eat. I take Maalox now if I need an antiacid because I threw up too many
times in the first few months right after I had taken Pepto Bismol and it
made me nauseous to even look at the pink liquid.
Since my surgery my BP has reduced measurably..
..from 148/99 to 128/70 (yesterday) and I am off my BP meds. I just went in
for my year checkup and my labs are ALL fantastic. My HDL is still a bit low
but it has gone from 31 to 42 in 6 months (50+ is normal for a woman).
My mother was obese and had died at the age of 62
due to complications with cancer. Her weight spiraled out of control with
all the meds she was taking and her awful eating habits. She was probably
close to 450 pounds at one point. Losing her was horrible, she was one of my
best friends, and I grieved for years. I was only 36 when she died. My
father had died when I was 8, and she raised my brother and me on her own.
If she had had the chance to have this surgery, her life would have been so
different. She was a fighter and lived years beyond what the statistics
predicted she would, but she was always in pain and her weight contributed
to the pain and the complications she endured. Oh how I wish she had had
this chance.
I am so thankful for this wonderful opportunity to
reclaim my life. I won't spend the autumn and winter years of my life
sitting on the sidelines watching life go by. I am not a recluse anymore,
and have become a traveling tutor. I
I feel so good about myself and my newly born ZEST
FOR LIFE. The MGB staff is so wonderful, and I for one, am happy to have one
less thing to worry or obsess about (my weight), because I know it will take
care of itself while I am busy attending to the opportunities that life has
to offer.
The other part of my recovery is the vitamins and
supplements I take. They are fantastic. The vitamins come from a company
called UNIVERA Life Sciences. I take a product called Ageless Essentials, it
is delicious cranberry based liquid that contains the vitamins, minerals,
iron, whey protein, fiber, biotin, essential salts, and essential omega fats
that we need post-op by providing it with natural products. It is 100%
absorbable. I also take Ageless Extra which gives me more energy.
Now back to the ulcer: at ten months I was
introduced to the Univera products when someone suggested I take their Aloe
Gold. I started getting a lot of relief. Aloe Gold balances the ph in the GI
tract and repairs and restores the GI tract. It has also helped with the gas
problem. I don't peel wallpaper off the walls anymore or clear a room in 10
seconds flat. It was bad when even the dogs would wake up and sniff and walk
out. It has disappeared almost completely.
I used Aloe Gold everyday until I had the endoscopy
on July 7, 2006. It showed that the ulcer had healed, and I credit that to
the Aloe Gold. As I continue to baby my tummy, Aloe Gold is a daily
supplement.
I credit my increasing health to the combination of
the MGB and the UniVera products.
Sometimes I still feel like I am walking in a dream
when I tell people I lost 132 pounds in 1 1/2 years. I can remember that at
this time last year I wondered what it would be like to say those words. The
year has gone by so quickly. I am still surprised when I glance at myself in
the mirror and have to do a double take. Last week I put on the pants I wore
to Las Vegas a year ago and both of my legs and my hips fit in one leg. I am
moving with ease, I am able to manage my businesses, and I can keep up with
my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter and love cuddling with my new 7 month old
grandson.
Have a wonderful journey,
Jill

| Reversal of Hair Loss following Vertical Gastroplasty when
Treated with Zinc Sulfate Obes Surg. 1996
Feb;6(1):63-65. Neve HJ, Bhatti WA, Soulsby C, et al Research
Psychologist, Department of Clinical Psychology, Gaskell House, Swinton
Grove, Manchester, M13, UK.
BACKGROUND: Nutritional complications
following surgery for morbid obesity include both vitamin and mineral
deficiency.
Severe cases of zinc deficiency can lead to
alopecia, diarrhea, emotional disorders, weight loss, intercurrent
infection, bullous-pustular dermatitis and hypogonadism in males. Hair loss
may occur after vertical gastroplasty (VG).
METHODS: Diffuse hair loss occurred in 47 out
of 130 patients who underwent VG. All patients had been routinely advised to
take a multivitamin supplement, but 47 developed hair loss despite taking
the supplement. These patients were then prescribed Zinc Sulfate 200 mg
three times a day. There was no alteration in the vitamin supplementation.
RESULTS: Arrest of hair loss and regrowth
occurred in all patients.
However, five patients reported recurrence of hair
loss after stopping zinc.
This loss was reversed within 6 months of
recommencing zinc 600 mg daily.
Ten control patients had no hair loss after
gastrointestinal surgery.
CONCLUSION: Significant hair loss occurred in
about one-third of patients after VG, and was reversed by zinc
supplementation.

Hi Dora, I buy my Zinc Sulfate online at American
RX.com It's very inexpensive, 5 or 6 dollars per bottle of 100.
I had stopped taking it a couple of months ago, but since have started
hairloss again at 16 months out so I have restarted my zinc and the hairloss
has almost stopped already!

My 3 month anniversary!
Hi Janice,
Susan here, we meet in Houston before your surgery. Glad things are
going great for you. Congrat's on your 55 lbs. Isn't it wonderful to
have energy again. I was so happy during Christmas, I was able to go
shopping for 10 hours and was still going that night at 11:00pm.
Before I couldn't stand on my feet for more than 2 hours. I've lost
75 lbs and it will be 6 months in 3 days. I'm looking forward to the
next 6 months. Dr. P said I was right on track with my weight lose.
I saw him yesterday and he is still just as sweet as ever.
Take care,

he drew illustrations, used props, and made sure we understood his answers.
The surgery wasn't as easy for me as some on this

Subject: A week of many firsts and thank yous
This week has been filled with several poignant moments for me that have
thrilled me beyond believe that I had to share them with you all and say
thanks.
This week I reached and past my doctor's goal weight, a weight I haven't
seen in 24 years and I skated and tobogganed for the first time in 24 years.
A few minor injuries but still had the energy to get back up and dust myself
off. The icing on my cake to end this most fabulous year of firsts was going
to buy new jeans today and walking out of the store with 2 pairs of size 6.
I have never in my life been a size 6 and tears can to my eyes when the
clerk handed them to me and they fit.
For such a personal journey I can't believe how many new people have
become a part of my life and who without their help and support I never
could have had such an amazing week and year. 2005 started off to be one of
the worst years of my life and now 12 months later I look back and think
wow, how blessed am I.
Now for my Oscar acceptance speech...I would first like to say thank you
to the very first group of MGB ladies (Donna and Donna) that I meet when I
attended my first support meeting in Welland in September 2004, you really
helped me to get the ball rolling. A huge thank you to Kim Hazen and Dr.
Fiala for being my role models and helping me make the decision to take back
control of my life and showing me that there really is a light at the end of
the tunnel. A great big thank you to all that supported me online when I was
new to the group. To those who listened to my troubles with my doctor/OHIP
and offered me solutions to my problems, Gloria, Miriam, Alexandra, Martha,
Tricia, Ann, Joan and anyone else I may have forgotten. Thank you to the
wonderful people at OHIP for approving my surgery, without them, well I
don't even want to think about where I would be. Thank you to the wonderful
Michigan support group for all your support and suggestions the day before
my surgery. I look forward to coming to Michigan again and enjoying
something other then soup with you all. Thank you to Dr. Rutledge for
pioneering this amazing surgery, Dr. Doroghazi (my new hero) for giving me
the greatest tool to use in taking back my life. Again to Kim Hazen for her
shoulder to cry on when I was emotionally distraught and petrified to leave
Michigan. A great big thank you to my step mom (my support person) who was
there for me the entire time and still is my number one support person. A
huge thank you and hug to my dearest friend Donna Giles who without her
ongoing support from day one I never could have made it this far.
And last but not least to everyone in all the support groups who have
helped, inspired, supported me and everyone else in this group, a very huge
and heartfelt thank you to you all.
Happy New Year

| Dear Dr. Rutledge,
December 16, 2005 is my second anniversary for the MGB op. I flew all the
way from London in England to America for the operation, weighing 248
pounds. Today I weigh 146 pounds (over 100 pounds) I have had NO problem
with loose skin, and sagging skin which in itself is a blessing.
I would recommend you and the MGB to anyone anytime, and I thank you for
being honest and truthful about the MGB, and also for forcing us to
understand the aftermath so that we could take care of ourselves better.
Stay blessed

| Dear Dr. R,
Unfortunately I never have had the pleasure of sitting and chatting with
you Dr. R. I have however had the pleasure of listening to you speak at one
of our monthly seminars in Bay City. I had the surgery on Aug. 23. Kim and
Dr. D. are fabulous. The hospital staff was amazing, treating me like I was
the only patient they had to look after. This in itself is unprecedented in
the world of the over weight. Usually we are shunned or worse, looked over,
and made to feel inadequate at every turn. People think we're deaf, weak and
stupid. Not true, but you know that I'm sure. Anyway to the reason for this
email. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for teaching Dr. D.
to do this surgery. It is a miracle. It is a blessing. .... Thank you for
the manual. Thank you for the surgery. Thank you for saving my life and the
lives of so many. Thank you for curing my asthma, restless legs syndrome,
arthritis, fatigue, personal hygiene issues, weak bladder, sexual functions,
dry skin, borderline diabetes and sleep apnea. God Bless and keep you Dr.
Rutledge. I will be eternally grateful and thankful to you!

| Dear Dr. Rutledge,
On January 13th 2005 you and Dr. Doroghazi did my MGB. I wanted to tell
you that you have really made a difference in my life. Last year on my 39th
birthday I was 275 pounds. This birthday has been great. It started out this
morning by getting ready for church in size 10 new fancy Christmas clothes.
This morning was my boys Christmas program at church. Instead of sitting in
the back, we walked up the fourth row (the closest without people already
seated). I so much enjoyed the program! I also enjoyed all the wonderful
comments on how great I look. My husband said I looked stunning. As of
yesterday morning I have lost 120 pounds. Thank You Thank You Thank You!
Merry Christmas,

SCREAMED out OH... MY... GOD!!!!!! The pharmacist came running over...."maam,
maam! Please don't be too worried, the pressure is running slightly
high...we had an earlier cutomer come in and it was high as well". I burst
out.. "I JUST HAD GASTRIC BYPASS AND THIS SAYS I LOST 23 POUNDS IN 15

"Good for you!" she laughed across the counter. Then my daughter and I ran

Subject: Get Fixed in '06 best_beverly
I can't think of anything that
would be more fitting for '06 than to get fixed! Get the MGB and see how
your life changes! Let's see if I can count just a few blessings that have
happened since my dance with the doctor as well as my daughter, Lindsey's:
1) Less fat = more respect professionally and personally. While it sounds
rather simplistic, it is true. Society views fat people as undisciplined
with no willpower. They see us as substandard individuals who just don't
have any self-control and therefore they don't think we care about how we
look. Fat people don't get the respect in the work place that they deserve.
People don't think we can possibly be smart!
2) Losing weight means being able to get in and out of the car without
doing the "drop and roll" version of vacating the "premises."
3) Wearing clothes that are trendy, stylish, and available in all stores
instead of at over priced specialty stores is an added bonus with the MGB.
Now when going into a "teeny bopper" store for the purpose of buying
Christmas gifts, people don't stare at me and wonder why the fat lady is in
the wrong store!
4) Feeling good about one's self will show in your demeanor as well. When
one is truly happy with your physical looks, you tend to be more confident
and outgoing.
5) The MGB allows us the freedom to participant instead of spectate.
We've been on the sidelines all too long and this wonderful surgery releases
us from the Prison from Hell: FAT CELL 101
6) Regaining good health is a given. With the MGB, most of your weight
related issues will dissipate. Your heart will thank you. Your blood will
thank you. Your lungs will thank you. Your feet will thank you. You won't be
spending time in the hospital getting replacement parts because your heavy
body has worn them out. Your knees will thank you, your hips will thank you.
7) Taking the "risk" of weight loss surgery may seem to be a gamble, but
not taking it seems to be a gamble of larger consequences.
8) The MGB is the beginning of a full body makeover. Your smile will be
wider, your step will be lighter, your attitude happier, and your friends
will draw closer.
9) Don't stay in the prison of fat, you have a way out. You have a cell
phone, don't you? haha Call clos.net and get something going NOW. Waiting
just allows the clock to tick, your life to be on hold, and your health to
continue to go downhill.
10) Need I say more? Get fixed in '06! There are plenty of us who are
here to encourage you, but it is ultimately YOU who has to pick up the phone
and "call before midnight tonight!" haha Couldn't you see the MGB as an
infomercial? hahahahaha Dial 1-800 and operators are on hand to serve
you...but wait, get your surgery date now and we'll throw in a free set of
ever sharp knives. Oh, and if that isn't enough, we'll send you not one but
two free videos of your life as an unhappy, unhealthy, blob! You are gonna
love seeing these "never before seen and unedited" movies of you wearing
your fat clothes, sitting on the sidelines of life, and eating snickers in
the bathroom!
Have I made my point? You have the power and the doctors are waiting to
help you get where you need to be.

| Heather-- I'm not familiar with the book you're talking
about, but there is lots of information out there that doesn't really apply
to the MGB. Additionally, if you read the MGB message board for very long,
you will read plenty of negative comments. People experience everything
post-surgery from nausea to pain to leaks to jealous family and friends.
Everything is discussed here, warts and all. The thing is that the problems
are overwhelmingly manageable. The CLOS people want nothing more than a 100%
positive outcome and they do whatever is necessary to make that happen.
Surgeons are all experienced and thoroughly trained. They give their cell
phone numbers to patients and answer at almost any time day or night. The
CLOS organization is helpful and encouraging.
There are, to be sure, myriad problems associated with MGB. I had lots of
them. Hair loss, a stubborn stab wound that drained nastily for a few weeks,
diarrhea, gagging on Pepto and Gatorade, etc., but all those went away and
have been offset by the positive aspects of losing weight. The list is of
positives is endless and many, many people post the positives periodically.
There are the obvious ones like no more diabetes or high cholesterol or high
blood pressure, generally feeling better than we have in years, looking
better than some of us thought possible and so on. And then there's the not
so obvious like feeling more confident, having a social life again after
hiding at home eating for years, and the thrill of not being "the fat one"
anymore.
My own experience has been typical in that I have had no problems that
were not discussed in the manual or on the board ad nauseum.
Look for problems and you shall find them. But I have never read a post
by anyone more than a few weeks out who doesn't think the trade-offs are
worth it. Even people who have developed leaks or required revisions don't
come right out and say, "I wish I'd never had the MGB." There may be those
people, but I haven't seen their posts.
Best of luck to you. Keep reading and keep educating yourself.

| Marci, I hope that this will help you on your way. Good luck
it will come!
Marci, I hope that this will help you on your way! Here is my contact
info.
My name is Kim Wilkinson from Jacksonville, Florida. My weight the night
I left home for MGB was 328 pounds, this morning I weighed 202
pounds.
I am 5' 7" tall and held my weight pretty good, until the last couple of
years. I was not haunted by any medical problems due to my weight, but I
attributed that to only being 35 years old. I knew that it was coming
though, because I didn't feel well. My feet ached everyday and I had little
control over my bladder. My stomach had gotten so heavy, that it was causing
some problems. I had two girlfriends that were sisters that had RNY surgery
July 2002 and I thought that they had both lost their minds. I began to
research this after they were dropping weight like crazy. I requested an
informational packed from their doctor here locally and did not feel
comfortable enough to just send in the questionnaire. I stumbled upon
C.L.O.S. in October and began to read the manual. I never left this sight. I
didn't know how, but I knew I would have this done. I began working on my
packet officially in March 2003 and went to the bank for a loan in May. I
sent in my completed packet in June and on August 27, 2003 I was the blessed
owner of an MGB.
We had an 8 hour drive
and it was 7 1/2 hours too many. I was so anxious to meet everyone after
numerous phone calls and conversations. Dana was so nice, she will talk to
you about ANYTHING. There is not a single question that I would feel
uncomfortable asking her. She is very open and honest about the pros and
cons and will answer any question to her full capabilities.
The morning of surgery I met Dr. Rutledge and had the joy of spending about
3 hours with him before surgery that morning. He is a trip, he will make you
laugh until your side hurts. There was an open talk time with him only for
the surgery patients of that day and it was nice. At that time, you can ask
him ANYTHING and he will also answer very honestly. He was very personable
and friendly and I felt completely comfortable with him.
That's just how they make you feel. You will be more prepared for this
surgery through your packet and have full knowledge of everything that is
going on. I know the packet is very overwhelming and frustrating to most,
but I was one of the few that actually enjoyed it. I wanted to know
everything there was to know before I went in. During my recovery, one of
the nurses at the hospital said, that he had never seen patients more aware
of what was done and what type of recovery to expect than Dr. Rutledge's
patients. He wants to make sure that you know exactly what you are doing and
make sure you are fully aware of what you are to expect. Physically I have
had no problems what so ever. It was a breeze to recover from MGB. Mentally,
I really had a hard time. Thirty five years of bad habits are hard to break
and let's face it, if I was not addicted to food I would have not been there
in the first place. I actually mourned food and wanted it back. I wanted to
loose the weight with still being able to eat like I did before, well, let
me tell you that you can not eat like before. My husband asked me to give
him a percentage of what I thought I ate now to then. I eat about 20% of
what I ate before. That is an amazing difference, I am a country girl with a
thanksgiving meal on the table every night and I ate A LOT. I really did not
realize how much I ate until I didn't eat it anymore. I think that sometimes
you convince yourself after being fat for so long that you really don't eat
that much and you don't know why you are fat. You do eat a lot, or you
wouldn't be in this boat. If I were asked if I would recommend this to
anyone, absolutely. I was very please with everything, The doctor, the staff
and the hospital. I hope I have answered all of your questions, if not email
me with a specific question and I will try to answer it the best that I can.

| Hi Redondo Pattie here,
I just wanted to report I just finished my 1 month follow-up visit with
my PCP. I will go by my scales as I adjusted them to the hospitals the day
after surgery. I have lost 31 pounds! Yes, I am excited, and thrilled
because it is not even really a month yet, MGB was Jan 13 so I am a few days
short of a month.
Blood pressure has dropped from 145/95 (on meds) to 117/72!!! Doctor has
cut my blood pressure meds in half dose and said I will be off them next
month!!!!! YEEHAH......I have been on them for 12 years!!!!!
Feeling good, better on some days than others. I have been living on
ceviche (seafood cocktails) for lunch and alternate between pure protein
shakes for dinner and/or refried beans. I also eat watermelon, pineapple,
and cantaloupe. Fruits really taste yummy to me, and the watermelon makes my
new pouch feel really good! Of course I only eat 3 to 4 bites of any of the
fruit but I feel satisfied and it seems to agree with me fine. For breakfast
I am eating cream of wheat or yogurt and Citrucel ...(the clear no flavor
one). I was laughing, I have been eating all my Citrucel in the
morning.....whoops? I thought I was supposed to use 1 full scoop....not 1
tablespoon????? So, I guess it is okay, to do this only once a day?
Also, I really have gotten used to Gatorade.....I really prefer it to
water...never thought that would happen! I used to buy water by the
cases......I just drink Gatorade as is....tastes fine to me.
I am really noticing my clothes feeling and looking looser! I have 4
closets full of clothes from size 32 to 14 so I guess I will be okay with
the clothes for a while (LOL)!!! But it is fun, to wear things that were
skin tight and see how they fit just right now (smile).
I guess it is time to put down my weight in past/present/future terms
now, I was too embarrassed until now. I am so happy to be such a loser!

| Earthquakes, Hurricanes, and the MGB! I have received many
e-mails from people contemplating the MGB lately. One of their biggest
concerns and questions is: "will it hurt?" When I answer that question from
my own experience I would have to say, "no, it won't hurt, no pain, no
nausea, no vomiting! I went shopping on the way home from the hospital and
golfing the next day. I didn't have bouts with unusual bathroom problems,
gas, or plateaus. My experience was a good one. My energy levels were
outrageous and I have lost consistently. However, this is MY experience...it
is not necessarily the experience you will have."
I would like to compare the MGB with earthquakes and hurricanes. All
disasters are possible with mother nature and surgical risks. No one can say
with 100% accuracy that you will have smooth sailing...just like living in
California will guarantee you an earthquake or two. Some experience the
destructive ones and others only feel the aftershocks! Those who live in
Florida know more about hurricanes and the devastation that they can cause.
We in the Midwest get a little of everything but the severity depends on
being at the wrong place at the wrong time!
So, relax and put your faith in God. The results of the MGB are really
out of your hands. You have to trust your surgeon and then follow the
program closely. Whether or not you have unforeseen complications is not
predictable but it is something that can be dealt with. You have lots of
support from this group and if they haven't had it, it probably hasn't
happened!
Remember that we are all unique individuals. Any one of us might have a
horrible experience getting tonsils removed while most go through that
surgery without incident. If fear is allowed to stop us in our tracks, we
wouldn't enjoy living!
You have to decide if you are fed up with how things are in your obese
life and really want change. If you choose change and that change involves
the MGB, then go for it wholeheartedly! Keep a positive attitude and see
yourself as whole, healed, and healthy! A negative attitude is sure to stop
you from seeing your potential.
I wish all of you who are on the fence about this surgery good luck as
you reach deep within yourselves for the right answer and direction. For me,
this was a life changing event that I am forever grateful.
I am always willing to correspond privately and publicly with those of
you who need answers or simply need encouragement when your mind is in an
quandary! Good luck in your decision-making process.

===== I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do
something. What I can do, I should do and With God's help, I will do. |
| Time for my three month update. I have lost another six and a
half inches off of various parts of my body this month and another eleven
pounds. That brings my total loss to thirty-nine and three quarter inches
and fifty-two pounds since the day of surgery!
Fried foods still are not appealing and eggs and milk don't agree with
me, so I avoid all of them. I can drink most juices without cutting them
down with water. My favorites are orange juice or V-8.
I am still drinking my Gatorade, doing my shots of Pepto-Bismol
and downing Citrucel twice a day.
I am still going to the gym 3x a week. I guess I am adding muscle to my
body because my inches lost include an additional 1/2 inch gained in each
calf! My triceps are still pathetic, but I work at them every time I go to
the gym.
I have only had one person that didn't know about my surgery comment on
my weight loss. I think I had stretched my clothes out so much that the new
clothes I wear now are the same size. (good old spandex has amazing
stretching powers) I am thrilled because I am beginning to see signs of my
collar bones again and I missed them!

I wanted to let you know that I am very moved by your 3 year update... I
was literally crying at the end of your letter... I had my surgery in
January with my mother, and you helped me so much the day I had my surgery -
you were so supportive - while I was crying like a baby in the back of the
room waiting to be taken back for surgery... You have been a wonderful
support - and I thank you for taking a job with Dr. R. so that you can help
so many people get to where you are right now... I can't wait to do my 3
year post.. I think of you often and remember your words "it's so much
better on the other side" and now that I am there - you are so right... I
have lost right at 45 lbs in 2 1/2 months... Thank you...

| HI,
I do not post very often but I did want to share my success. I had my
surgery on 5/6/02 and was 384 pounds. As of March 21, 2003 I weighed in at
226. I about had a fit when I got on the scale. I had been on a 3 week
plateau, so I stopped getting on the scale and really started watching
everything I put in my mouth. I am still doing at least 2 protein shakes a
day, eating yogurt and granola, plenty of veggies, TAKING ALL my prescribed
vitamins and other Rx. Some more happy news is that since 3/3/03 I am NO
LONGER on medication for diabetes. My PCP said that he will soon take me off
my blood pressure medicine, he has already cut the dose in half.
The best advice I can give to all is follow what Dr. R. tells you and you
will do just fine. Don't try to rush into eating everything, that will come
in time and you will learn what works best for you. My best to all and I
hope to report in several months again that I am below 200. When that
happens I am sure you all will hear the scream of joy coming from Raleigh NC

and suggestions for handling busy situations. Whined to each other on
occasion. Kind of neat to be able to share with a close friend that is
experiencing the same things. We have been able to share the excitement and
changes all along the way.
25 minutes in surgery and some nausea for the first 24 hours. I had no
pain. I did experience nausea on occasion for the first few weeks. I lost 17
pounds the first week and 37 by 1 month. I was down 112 by 6 months. I
couldn't believe it. I did have to concentrate on drinking Gatorade and
getting enough protein to increase my energy. I talked a few times to Dr. R
and his staff and they convinced me that my diet was not including enough
protein. I was craving fruits and veggies which was good, but not helping my
overall energy level. Now that is no problem. I have all my energy plus. I
feel wonderful. I did lose some hair between the months of 4-7. I panicked,
but it was fine. I began taking Biotin and ZMA from the GNC store and either
my body adjusted or they helped. I am not sure, but my hair is healthy and
thick as ever now. My body is shrinking in proportion and I am loving that
part a lot. It makes it easy to shop for clothes. I do have lots of loose
skin on my arms and thighs, but I don't even care. Maybe a couple of years
from now it will matter. Today I am just very thankful to feel and look like
I do. I don't drink pop. The few sips I have taken because it looked good
reminds me that I don't need it. I don't even care for the taste anymore.
Kind of weird, since I loved Diet Coke before. I also have avoided alcohol
with no problem. It's small thing to give up socially for the bonus I have
been given. I also can say that I haven't had any additional medicines (even
over the counter) other than prescribed by Dr. R. I have 1 anti-biotic after
the cruise from a bad cold/sinus bug.
In October we went on a cruise and so did my surgery buddy, Patti. We
went with a total of 7 couples. We played hard and daily were thankful that
we had had the surgery prior to going. We climbed Dunn's River Falls with
little effort and spent time enjoying it instead of wondering what those
around me were thinking of my size. It was wonderful We spent the week
dressing up, playing in the sun, and even dressed up for a Halloween party
on the ship. Too cool. I would have had fun before, but would have avoided
some of the things we did. Lots of foods to try and we did just in small
amounts.
I started at 332 and today weighed in at 159. I have now lost 173 pounds.
It is slowing down as expected. I eat pretty much whatever I choose, but my
choices are usually much different than in the past. Around the holidays I
ate more rich foods and my new system would react, but not terribly. I do
avoid real ice cream and milk for the most part, but other than that I seem
to manage with other foods. The milk products seem to make my stomach very
gassy. For the first several months it was difficult for me to eat meat such
as chicken plain, but now eating meat is no problem. I ate a lot of shrimp
cocktail, grilled shrimp, salmon, and stir fry made with shrimp over the
first several months. I eat very little bread, mostly because it fills me up
fast and I know I am suppose to make sure I eat enough protein. It doesn't
make me feel bad, just full. We always had lots of fruit at our house, but
now watermelon, strawberries, and pineapple are staples like milk, bread,
and eggs.
Let me see.... In the last year I no longer worry about entering an
airplane and whether the seat belt will fit. I never worry if I will take up
too much room anywhere. I have been roller skating with my 7 year old many
times since fall. I am taking him to Disney World the first of March and he
and I are riding every ride available. I plan to go downhill skiing with him
before the season is done. I am having a little trouble fitting that one
into the schedule since my 17 year old has us going 6 weekends in a row to
gymnastic meets (3 are out of state). I am hoping to still make it. If I get
enough studying in the next couple of nights we might try for Saturday
afternoon. My little guy plays basketball on Saturday mornings and my oldest
races motorcycles every Sunday. I obviously won't get to see all of them,
but leaves little time for skiing. My life has always been very full, but
now I CAN KEEP UP AND DO IT ALL SMILING. It takes much less effort to climb
the arenas, shopping with the team, etc.
I exercise 3 times a week. My friend and I actually were asked to be
interviewed for the radio ad for the facility that we exercise. It was fun.
We couldn't say that the exercise made us lose weight, but I can see an
improvement in my ability and stamina to work out on the equipment. I
actually enjoy exercising and I would have never said that before. Patti
coaxed me into joining in the beginning and I am really glad she did.
I don't have a lot more to add (after rambling for an hour) other than
Dr. Rutledge has given me a chance to be an active person I enjoyed so much
years ago. I feel like a 39 year old in a 39 year old body. Prior to surgery
I was beginning to feel very old before my time. I was avoiding activities
with my 7 year old that I enjoyed with my 21 and 17 year old. I still have a
chance to make the special memories with my little guy. Everyone has
priorities and for me it is the things I get to do with my family. My
husband, kids, family, and friends have all been very supportive through
this change. My husband calls me 'skinny' who's he talking to.... Just
kidding it has been fun for us too.
I faithfully take my vitamins, Citrucel, and Actigall. I had my 1 year
labs and reviewed them over the phone with Dana. Everything looked great. I
will have a 1 year check up with my PCP in the next couple of weeks. I have
been a little preoccupied. My oldest got married on New Years. I can tell
you that it was so nice to not be heavy for this event. I always tried to
take pride in dressing and my appearance, but its so much fun right now. I
can shop anywhere and I am buying 8's. I don't know if I was ever a 10
before. I stayed small enough to be on my high school prom pom squad many
years ago, but I was still a size 11/13 in juniors. Buying 10's before
Thanksgiving just as well as been a size 2 it made me feel so good.
For me the MGB surgery has given me exactly what Dr. Rutledge has
explained a chance to be on the same playing field as other average size
adults. I hope I will always respect this opportunity and keep my health in
check and use this tool as given.
Good luck and I each of you the success and good days ahead I am
experiencing. I wish good health to all.

| Hello,
January 26, 2001, was the beginning of a new life for me. That is the day
I had my MGB with Doctor Robert Rutledge. My beloved Vincent was with me
every minute, and stayed in my hospital room all night with me on a
recliner. He wanted this for me so much. It took Doctor Rutledge 38 minutes
to do my surgery, with no complications, thank God. I was so afraid I was
going to be the one who died on the table. The first few hours were very
uncomfortable, but not really painful. I had a pain pump and I really used
it which helped so much. As the hours passed it was much better. That
evening we walked a little outside of my room at the hospital, with my
husbands help. And again the next morning, the walking helps. That day after
Doctor Rutledge came to see me, I went back to the hotel, and I really
rested on and off all evening. It was a little hard to get on and off the
bed at the hotel, but each time it got easier. I was so glad it was over and
I was alive, and very thankful that all was well and going very smooth. The
next day we took a walk across the street from the hotel, just to get
moving, there was a little shopping center there so we went to the drug
store and we had gone to get dinner for my husband, and I had a soup. We
walked back to the hotel and I rested. The next day I went to the beauty
parlor, and later we went out for a while. I was feeling great, each day was
better, I had my staples removed on the seventh day and we were ready to
head back to New York. I was 297 lbs before my surgery, and in the week I
had lost 6 lbs. We drove home, I should say my husband drove home. We were
told not to drive for two weeks. I reported in everyday, and was on the
computer all the time, I kept in touch with Doctor Rutledge daily and would
write to the list all the time. I lost at a steady pace, I think I was much
slower than others, but I was 58 years old when I had my surgery and I was
very happy with my progress. Within a year I had lost 100 lbs.
We went back to North Carolina for the picnic and I had my follow up
visit with the good Doctor. My Husband Vincent was so happy that I was doing
so good and although at the time I had lost 87 lbs and still had a way to go
(this was in September). But seeing everyone was great, Vinnie was so happy
to meet everyone, we went to the Doctor's office, to the Friday night
dinner, and then to the picnic and we were both so happy. We said good bye
to everyone at the picnic, and we left for home the next morning. We drove
from New York and we were on the way home almost had reached home (we had 3
hours more to reach home) and Vinnie had a massive heart attack behind of
the wheel of the car. He died that Sunday, September 30. Since that time I
continue to go on, and hope that he sees me and the progress I have made
since then.
This past December 30th, I had plastic surgery on my arms to get rid of
all the excess skin, there was a lot to cut off. I am still recovering, had
lymph nodes removed at the same time, thank God the report was good. Now if
all goes as planned I am going to have a breast lift in either March or
April. After that, I would like to start an exercise program which I never
did yet. But I am 61 years old now, I will play thing by ear now and as long
as I do not gain any weight, I will be happy. I do take all of my vitamins
and supplements, my protein drinks I get in but not the way I should. I do
not know how to thank Doctor Rutledge for the change in my life through the
surgery, I had tried so many things all of my life and nothing ever worked
for me. I was headed for the wheel chair and not kind of a life at all. It
is too bad my Vinnie cannot be here to see and enjoy the changes and do all
the things we had planned to do. Hope to see everyone again, I feel I have
made so many friends in all of you and keeping in touch is my lifeline. I
treasure each and every one of you. Thank you all for all of your help and
kind words. Love you all.

Surgeon Info: Robert Rutledge, M.D., F.A.C.S. (Statesville, NC) Dr.
Rutledge is an excellent surgeon with a very personable bedside manner. I
found his office staff to be very friendly and helpful and I like the fact
that most of them are former patients! If anyone out there is considering
gastric bypass do yourself a favor and go online to his website www.clos.net
and read and research, then go to one of his clinics to have even more
questions answered. Dr. R have very strict pre and post op care instructions
and they are so important to your success that when you have the MGB you
will sign forms stating you will follow the MGB rules - this is for your own
health and safety. Gastric Bypass is not an easy fix for weight loss and as
you will see from his extensive online manual and pre-surgical research
requirements he wants you to be a well informed patient and know all the
risks along with all the benefits of the Mini Gastric Bypass surgery he
performs. I would rate Dr. R at the top of the charts for skill and
personality. Just spend a few minutes with him and you will understand why I
would sing his praises. |
| Hello,
Five of us had surgery 1/24. I had surgery that took about 33 min, no
pain at all, no problems. Have had Jell-O, crackers, broth, yogurt, tomato
soup, and Gatorade. Came back to motel about 10 this morning. Had a nap this
afternoon. Feel good except for slight cough and sore nose from the oxygen.
Would definitely do it again based on results so far. Wonderful doctor and
staff. Hospital excellent and caring.
Affordable Corporate Suites are great, 189.00 plus tax for a one bedroom
suite. Get your reservations early. Now that others have found out about it
they are running full.

| Hi Michelle,
I was a MAJOR stress eater prior to MGB. The funny thing about the MGB is
that I don't feel as stressed about things as I used to. I think it is
because I feel so much better physically post MGB than I did before that I
can handle it better or it does not bother me as much.
I used to eat for stress all the time. Now I do find myself in stress
situations thinking I should eat but I am not hungry. I have done 2 things
that have worked for me.
At home I have a bunch of craft things I can pick up and work on when I
am stressed. Beading, scrap booking, (trying to learn how to machine quilt).
When I am stressed I pick up a book and read or make some homemade cards
with stamps, or string some beads. (I am putting these items I have made
away for Christmas stocking stuffers!).
At work I have puzzle books so when I am stressed I work on a crossword
or find a word puzzle. I also have a stress rock. It is a small rock I found
at a gift shop somewhere that has a small dished area in it. I pick up the
rock and rub my thumb in the indention and there is something very soothing
about that - it works for me.
When I have tried food it does not work because I fill up so fast. It is
a matter of learning and training yourself with new patterns. This summer I
plan to start gardening again. I used to love to garden and now that I have
lost weight and feel physically able to be out working I can hardly wait for
spring. (My bulbs are starting to peak up out of the ground since it has
been so warm).
Best Wishes Michelle!

| Hi Everyone,
A while back i had lunch with a friend and the entire time nothing was
mentioned about my weight or MGB ... at he end of the meal she said, "OK,
now will you eat anything else TODAY??" LMAO
She thought that since i had surgery that i would never be able to eat
more than a spoonful at a time because she had seen stories on TV and it
shows people eating a cracker crumb and chewing it 30 times! so she figured
if i ate a near-normal amount that i would not eat again all day. people do
not understand what happens to us. the teeny bites are for the first 6 weeks
then you take 1/4 bites for a couple of weeks then 1/2 bites. Actually
taking 1/2 bites is a good habit to keep (MY old bites were at least 2X too
big anyway!
Another time a former student who was now in 3rd grade came running to me
one day (i was my highest weight when i taught him in K) he says, "Mrs.
Shumate!!!" (hugs me). Then he looks at me in a strange way and says “Hey! I
can hug all the way around you!!" well i was just soooo touched until he
added "Gosh! My ARMS are really getting LONG!!" LOL isn't that priceless?
Everyone have a great day.

| Hi All, I don't post very often but do read. Just wanted to
share my 2 year anniversary with you all. My surgery was 10/09/2000. Pretty
typical, no real pain or problems. My starting weight was 232 and as of this
morning I'm holding steady at 155. I've been this weight for about a year
now so I guess the process is finished for me. I'm still 20 lbs from goal,
but I can live with this. I went from a size 22 pant to a 12 (once in a
while a 10), and from 2X top to a large. My ring size went from a 8 to a 5
1/2. I don't follow the plan as well as I should and if I did I believe
those last 20 would come off. I have never dumped and had reflux only
sporadically. Well, just wanted everyone to know how pleased I am.

To have this surgery will be the best decision you ever make.
I am 64 yrs. old. Have lots of health problems, and used credit cards to
pay for it.
Yes, I am now on the other side, had my dance with Dr. Rutledge this past
Wednesday, the 28th.
We went to Statesville on Tues. stayed at
the Holiday Inn Express, (which is a beautiful place) I was the only one who
had surgery that day.
Took Dr.R. all of 28 mins. for it.
Woke up ,with hardly any pain at all.
Stayed overnight at the hospital that night
.Went to the Motel the next morning.
We went shopping that afternoon. To Wal Mart of course. I wanted to
walk. That is very important, walking--it helps with the soreness.
We came home today- feel great !!!
Sorry for the long post, but wanted everyone to know that I am home, and
doing well. Thanks for all the prayers and calls. I feel really blessed.
Till next time- Laverne.

| Hi Staci, Here
are the answers to your questions:
1. Would you do it again?
Absolutely!!! But I hope I don't have to!
2. What was you pain level (from 1 to 10)?
None, whatever number that is.
3. How long was it before you returned to work after having the surgery?
One week, mainly because of the stay in Statesville requirement.
4. What was your experience like with Dr. Rutledge, his staff and the
hospital?
Dr. Rutledge is exceptionally talented and very caring. His staff has all
had the MGB, so they understand. And the hospital was very hospitable. All
in all, a pleasant group of people.
5. Do you have anything negative to say about the surgery or after
effects?
Nothing yet. I'm just 6 weeks in, but so far I have no problems.
6. Date of surgery and before and after weights.

Hi Group,
My name is Kaye C. I live in Colorado. I had my MGB on March 22, 2002. To
date I have lost 123 lbs. I began at 310 size 26/28 I am now 187 and wear
size 12 (I am 5'8") I have read that many pre-op patients still need
contacts. I would be glad to help in any way I can. Please e-mail.
I was told something interesting today. My Mom said she heard on the radio
today that the IRS has decided to make any medical treatment for obesity tax
deductible. She said they are making it retroactive back to 1998. She was
not sure of the details, but I thought you may all be interested.
I feel fantastic and I am thankful to the Post Op group for all the
information I am able to skim through. Even though I don't post or read all
the mails, it is a nice security to know this group exists.
Thanks, Kaye

| Hi Flo!
I just returned from a conference with my husband and saw people I had
not seen in about three years. Needless to say, the few who did recognize me
were floored! The rest had no idea who I was and avoided us, and really gave
me the evil eye until I spoke first and they recognized my voice and the
looks on their faces were 'worth a thousand words'.
It feels really good to look so good, I've lost half of myself, and am in
a 6-8 top and 10 bottom. More importantly it is how I feel, and how I feel
about myself. I had a wonderful time on the trip, and can laugh and 'be a
part' again. My feet didn't hurt and I had so much energy I walked-up all
the steps and just felt great. I still make sure that the powder room is in
sight, but it gets better and better all the time! The feeling of being
pitied and ignored when there was truly nothing I could do about it was so
intimidating and I usually hid-----anywhere-----anytime! Not now, no more!
You know the cliche~~~~~Free to be me~~~again!
Hope you are well~~~~God Bless!

Hi everyone ,
Well its one year today that my life began to
change for the better. I have gone from **362lbs**
down to **238lbs** as of
today, that's 124lbs gone. My weight loss slowed considerably this month but
I am at the gym now 3 to 4 days a week and hope to get the lbs moving down
once again. I am so grateful for every single pound lost and all the
wonderful changes it has made in my life. I am also very thankful for all
the new friends this surgery has allowed me to find right here on this email
site. Have a great day everyone.

| Hi Everyone!
I had my surgery on June 16 in Davenport, FL. I big hello to my
littermates Barbara and Gay- it was so nice to share this experience with
you both! Mike and I have been thinking of you.
Dr H., Dr. Rajaram and Kathy were great! A BIG thank you to all
three of them! My procedure was 62 minutes (Dr H. was teaching). I
had some pain and nausea when I first got out of surgery, but everyone at
the hospital worked quickly and the relief was very fast. I was up and
walking around later that afternoon. I had my gall bladder out in 1993 and
this was SO much easier on me then that was.
For anyone who is planning on surgery in Florida, I have to say I
couldn't have had a better experience. Everyone, and I mean everyone, was so
wonderful. My husband said that they were even really nice to him and he
wasn't even a patient!-LOL
I cannot say how happy and excited I am to be post-op. It is very, very
cool! My husband (who is planning on MGB in August) said he is so excited
after seeing how well everything went.
Well, I have to check in on 2 little boys who are supposed to be taking a
nap-lol.

Hi All,
Just wanted to share my 2 yr up-date with everyone. Sorry, it's a little
late. 2 years ago I wore a Lane Bryant’s size 4X-5X, 34. Now I can wear any
stores L or 15/16. It is such a relief to be able to go into Wal-Mart or the
mall and just pick up something. I am at about 165 pounds now, a loss of
approximately 160 pounds. I would really like to lose another 20 by this
summer and perhaps have a TT. I am so happy about this surgery, wouldn’t
change anything. Now I can eat out normally, about 1/2 of the portion I used
to eat, so the question is not can I eat that much, but will I choose to. My
life has changed so much, thanks to Dr Rutledge. Work is no longer a
nightmare of pain. I don't hide in my house, scared to go out in public,
scared to be stared at, get stuck in restaurant booths, etc. I'm sure
everyone here is familiar with all of that. Also, thanks to Dr R, at the
wise old age of 51, I had my first date. I am seeing a wonderful guy. It's
kind of late, but I'm learning to fly and think of and am thankful to Dr R
and to all my support group buddies for making this all possible.
THANK YOU ALL!

| Hello Everyone,
My name is L'Tanya B. I had surgery 09/06/00. I have lost 178 pounds. I
have not had any complications, pains or anything. I can RUN upstairs, I can
walk for miles, and in fact I will be walking 50 miles for the Muscular
Dystrophy in June. I am so pleased with myself I don't know what to do.
I took out some pants I bought when I had lost 50 pounds and they were a
size 28. I now wear a 12. WHAT ABOUT THAT!!! I have a life now thanks to Dr.
R. I will never be able to thank him enough for what he has allowed me to
do. He gave me the opportunity to live. For that I am very grateful to him
and I always will be.
I now weigh 169. I can eat anything I like, but I just don't like to.
Some things such as chicken still hurt me. There was a lady that bragged
about being able to eat 2 steak biscuits from Hardies when she was only a
couple of months post-op. I don't see how in heck she was able to do it. I
am going on 2 years and I still can't eat that. I have to be careful about
eating. I still have the mindset or mentality that I have always had and I
am not that person anymore.
I will fix my plate like I always have and will only eat three or four
bites. Sometimes, I will just go back to eating the yogurt, Jell-O, and
soup. I don't have to worry when I eat that. Over all though, I wouldn’t
change a thing.
I went home to Georgia this past weekend and the people there didn't even
know whom I was. Now that feels GOOD. I had a complication with my lungs
when I had the surgery. That was brought on by my own stubbornness. I didn't
stop smoking as I was told. Dr. R stood by me until the very end. I would
sometimes wake up and although I was unable to speak with all of the tubing,
he would be there. I love him and I respect him to the highest. Having
worked in healthcare for 33 years, I have never met a doctor that cared so
much about his patients.
I know I talk a lot, but I have not posted in a while. I have not been
able due to work to make it to any of the gatherings we have, but I am still
a part of you and think of all of you daily. May God bless and keep you all
is my prayer.
Sincerely, L'Tanya |

| Hi MGB friends,
It's been a while since I posted. Hope everyone is well, and a special
hello to all the friends I met at the Christmas party. It was one of the
best nights of my life.
Well, today is my ten-month anniversary. I was looking at pictures of
myself at last year's birthday party and goodness, what a difference! As of
today I have lost 113 lbs!
When I submitted my packet, I thought that any weight in the 170s would
be a goal for me and as of today I weigh 179. Now, anything I lose will be
gravy. I will probably lose another 10 when I have my skin cut off some time
in the future. I'm not worrying about it right now, but I really do get
bothered by having to tuck my tummy into my pants, lol!
This surgery has been more than I ever dreamed; I feel wonderful, I eat
what I want (although I have been bitten by the snack bug lately, so I am
trying to get more protein), and I am no longer a slave to food. I simply
love my life! My children have a mother who can keep up with them and I have
a normal happy life for the first time as an adult.
I am so grateful for everyone who has supported me through this process
and I will be forever grateful to Dr. Rutledge for this life saving surgery.
God Bless All,
V. MGB 3/26/01 292/179/Who knows, but it's all good! |
| Hi,
I don't post often but I do read the posts if time permits and I feel as
if I know all of you. So, today on the 1 year anniversary of my MGB and I
want to share some thoughts with all of you.
I am down 100# and now weigh 192#. I had dreams of losing 146# by this
anniversary, but I just didn't make it, but you know when I stop and look
back to why I had the MGB, I remember that it was to become healthier and
happier and I have reached that goal. All of my one-year labs came back
great; I no longer take BP medicines; my antidepressant has been reduced;
and I feel great. To be almost 57 years old, I'm in great shape and I'm
active and almost pain free and if I had not had this surgery I'd never be
able to say all of this. So, yes it was worth it and it was a success. I
will try to exercise more and make healthier choices in my diet and who
knows, maybe I will lose that other 46#, but if I don't, it's okay, because
I am healthier and I feel great and I am OKAY!
Today, I dressed in my most hip outfit & shoes; curled my hair; put on
make-up and jewelry and went to two appointments and a birthday luncheon for
a friend. Everywhere I went, people told me how wonderful I looked and you
know, for the first time I can ever remember, I felt like I did look good
and it felt GREAT. This has been a year of changes and to be able to say I
felt like I looked good is quite an accomplishment in itself! This
improvement in my self-esteem is also wonderful thing. I appreciate the
support of my family, my local friends, and all of you - my MGB friends. The
joy I feel today would never have been possible without my PCP, the MGB and
Dr. Rutledge. I thank God for all of these blessings in my life.

Hi,
I’ve left one morbidly obese man on the floor somewhere – I have lost over
300 pounds since my MGB including pre-op and post-op.
I am scheduled for PS in a month to get rid of the redundant skin - I know,
I'm not done losing yet but my insurance may be changing and I already have
BC/BS approval.
I don't post often folks but I do read religiously. I am proud to be part of
this wonderful group and I thank Dr. R for his help in taking me from nearly
600# to almost 250# (I wish I had a better estimate but I weigh very
infrequently - <1x per month - and am focused on how I feel rather than the
scale). It is hard for me to believe that I have already lost what two
"normal" people weigh and have more to go, but today is my daughter's 6th
birthday and for the first time in a long time I actually believe I will be
there to see all the great birthdays (and holidays, special occasions, etc)
ahead.
MAY GOD BLESS YOU on this, the first day of the rest of our life!!!!!!
Stay well.

Hiya gang,
Well, I can hardly believe it's time for another update, and that it's
actually been 8 months. My weight loss continues to surprise me by not
coming to a dead stop, which I seem to anticipate at every turn. I am
still at the high end of Dr. R's weight loss prediction scale, which is
wonderful.... and I continue to have no complications whatsoever. Here's a
rundown of my 8 months of weight loss:
Month 1: 29 lb
Month 2: 20 lb (49)
Month 3: 10 lb (59)
Month 4: 14 lb. (73)
Month 5: 9 lb. (82)
Month 6: 15 lb. (97)
Month 7: 4 lb. (101)
Month 8: 12 lb. (113)
Total: 113 lb. lost, from 334 now to 221.
I can still eat pretty much anything I want. I still take my vitamins and
Prevacid every day. I find that I never have any aches or pains as long as
I take the Prevacid... and if I don't take it, and I eat something too
greasy, I get an achy spot in my tummy. So... I just take it.
I've never had any vomiting, never had any acid or bile reflux (thank God).
I try to be careful about what I eat near bedtime, and I sleep slightly
elevated just as a precaution. My hair loss has slowed to just slightly
more than average.
I bought my first dress that was NOT a plus size. It felt so strange to
wander into the "normal" section of a department store and actually find
something I could wear... and it felt even MORE funny to go on auto-pilot
and take all those larger sizes to the dressing room at first, only to find
they were all too large. Oh, and my 19 year old niece (who is NOT fat)
tried to give me her Old Navy zip-up sweatshirt because I'd been wishing for
one... she wanted me to try hers. I said "ummmmm Mandy... what are you
talking about?? I can't wear your clothes!" She said, "ummmm wanna bet?
Try it on!" It was a misses XL and it fit perfectly. I am still in awe of
the fact that I can even approach wearing something of hers.
Last week, I visited friends out of state, and they hadn't seen me for about
2 years... so, needless to say, they were in shock! While I was visiting, a
friend of theirs (guy) came over to join us for dinner... 29 years old,
blonde hair, blue eyes, 6'3", a total babe. As the evening progressed, I
was totally shocked to realize he was attracted to me! Took me a while to
adjust to that shock, but once I did, I enjoyed it thoroughly! I saw him
twice over the weekend, and have talked to him almost daily since coming
home. I came home feeling more feminine, and rather amazed to realize
there's actually a woman inside after all... and not just a fat girl.
I've babbled enough for today. :) I wish you all good health and
happiness.
